Singer/actor Lee Seung Gi appeared on the TV screen for the first time since he enlisted in February. It was at the 61st Memorial Day Ceremony held at Seoul National Cemetery on June 6. Being devoted to his military service, Lee Seung Gi had declined (participation in) all military personnel performance events; but on the contrary, he attended this ceremony and continuously lighted up the broadcast cameras.
On this day, Lee Seung Gi went on stage, wearing a beret and combat uniform, and sang the national anthem. It was in sharp contrast to the colorful ceremonial uniforms worn by the navy and air force band soldiers who were singing next to him. Lee Seung Gi is serving as an intelligence soldier in the 13th Brigade under Army Special Warfare Command. He even completed parachute training of jumping from an altitude of 700 meters back in April.
The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs who oversees the Memorial Day ceremony sounded out Lee Seung Gi through the Ministry of National Defense in early May (about participating in the ceremony). The Ministry of National Defense instructed Special Warfare Command, “He may participate if he himself wishes, without interrupting the unit operation.” A military official explained, “In the army, navy and air force, soldiers who participate in ceremonies are summoned, and we mostly choose military band soldiers who sing well. But in Special Warfare Command, Lee Seung Gi who has a singing career was chosen.”
Lee Seung Gi reportedly hesitated over participating in this event. When enlisting and serving, he has repeatedly expressed his intention to reject any attention or special favors given to celebrities. There was concern that this could be seen as him coming near to losing his original intention.
However, he changed his mind as this is a government ceremony the President attends and it’s the first event held during the month of patriots and veterans [June]. Another military official said, “Lee Seung Gi and his agency decided to participate because they identified with the noble purpose of this event.”
Lee Seung Gi does not plan to participate in any other events during the remainder of his military service.
