About Lee Seung Gi (last updated on September 4, 2014)
Lee Seung-gi (Hangul: 이승기; hanja: 李昇基; born: January 13, 1987) is a South Korean Singer, Actor,MC and Entertainer. Lee is well known as a member of the first season of weekend variety show 1 Night 2 Days from November 2007 to February 2012, and the MC of talk show Strong Heart from October 2009 to April 2012.
Singer (2004–present)
Scouted by singer Lee Sun Hee, Lee Seung Gi trained for 2 years before debuting on 5 June 2004 at the age of 17. Because You’re My Girl, his debut song from his first album The Dream Of A Moth, was a popular ballad which created a “liking older women” syndrome in South Korea. With this song, he won the “Best Newcomer” award in various music awards ceremonies in 2004 such as the M.net KM Music Festival and Seoul Music Awards. In 2007, he also won the “Best Male Solo Artist” award in the M.net KM Music Festival with his song White Lie from his third album Story Of Separation.
Lee released a digital single Will You Marry Me in 2009, which became a big hit in South Korea although there was no official promotion. With this single, he received the “Digital Single Bonsang” award in the 24th Golden Disk Awards. In 2010, he recorded a duet version of his 2007 song Smile Boy with South Korean figure skater Kim Yuna, and the song was the official 2010 FIFA World Cup commercial song in South Korea. He also received the “Digital Single Bonsang” award for the second consecutive time in the 25th Golden Disk Awards with his song Love Taught Me To Drink even though it was not promoted actively.
On 6 March 2012, Lee Seung Gi officially debuted in Japan by releasing his First Japan Debut Album Time for Love (also translated as Alone in Love, Generation of Love, and Era of Love) and a single of the same title which was ranked number one on Oricon Daily Chart. He held a concert at Nippon Budokan, Tokyo, on 1 June 2012, three months after his debut and became the fastest singer who holds a concert there after debuting.
On 22 November 2012, Lee Seung Gi released a mini-album (#5.5), Forest. The title song Return (also translated as Looking Back) became number one in music charts such as Instiz, Gaon Chart, and Billboard Korea K-Pop Hot 100 for weeks. It was number one for the month of December on Gaon Chart. It also set a record for being number one for six consecutive weeks on Billboard’s Korea K-Pop Hot 100.
Actor (2006–present)
In 2005, Lee Seung Gi guest-starred in MBC’s sitcom Nonstop 5. He then officially debuted as an actor in KBS’s 2006 weekend drama The Infamous Chil Sisters.
In 2008, he was offered the lead role in MBC’s historical drama The Return of Iljimae, but was forced to turn down the offer due to his tight schedule.
He was cast as the main male character in SBS’s weekend drama Brilliant Legacy in 2009, starring with Korean actresses Han Hyo Joo and Moon Chae Won. The drama maintained its top spot in viewer ratings for ten consecutive weeks and ended on 26 July 2009 with its 28th episode attaining a high viewer rating of 47.1%. The huge success boosted Lee’s popularity as an actor both locally and internationally. With this drama, he received the “Excellence in Acting” award, the “Top 10 Stars” award and the “Best Couple” award with Han Hyo Joo in the 2009 SBS Drama Awards.
His performance in 2010 SBS’s Wednesday-Thursday drama My Girlfriend is a Nine-Tailed Fox earned him his second “Excellence in Acting” award, “Top 10 Stars” award and “Best Couple” award with his co-star Shin Min Ah in the 2010 SBS Drama Awards.
In 2012, Lee starred in MBC’s Wednesday-Thursday drama The King 2 Hearts alongside actress Ha Ji Won.
In October 2012, Lee’s agency announced that he will star in a fantasy historical drama titled Gu Family Book (구가의 서), which began in April 2013. During its entire run, Gu Family Book became the most-watched drama in Monday-Tuesday time-slot for twelve consecutive weeks.
He is currently starring in SBS’s drama “You’re All Surrounded” airing from April 30, 2014 on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 21:55. The story revolves around rookie detectives working at a police station in Gangnam District, Seoul.
MC (2007–present)
Lee Seung Gi was a permanent member of the first season of 1 Night 2 Days, a segment of KBS’s weekend variety show Happy Sunday, from November 2007 to February 2012. In 2008, he received the “Best Popularity” award in the KBS Entertainment Awards for his high popularity in 1 Night 2 Days. His efforts and contributions in making 1 Night 2 Days one of the most loved and long-lasting variety shows in South Korea earned him the “Top Excellence MC” award in the 2010 KBS Entertainment Awards and the “Daesang” award with the other members of the first season in the 2011 KBS Entertainment Awards.
Lee took up another MC role in SBS’s Tuesday night talk show Strong Heart in October 2009, co-hosting with Kang Ho Dong, who is one of the top MCs in South Korea. Although it was a relatively new variety show on SBS, Strong Heart was recognized as the “Best Program” at the 2009 SBS Entertainment Awards and Lee was awarded the “Netizens’ Popularity” award after receiving the most number of votes in the online poll. After the departure of Kang Ho Dong from the show in September 2011, Lee took on sole MC responsibility and his performance earned positive comments from the viewers. Lee was recognized for his talent as an MC and received the “Top Excellence MC” award for two consecutive years in the 2010 and 2011 SBS Entertainment Awards. In March 2012, Lee announced his departure from Strong Heart in order to focus on his singing career. He recorded his last episode on 15 March, which was broadcast on 3 April.
Other Activities
Despite his busy schedule, Lee Seung Gi was able to graduate from Dongguk University within 4 years, obtaining his degree in International Trade and Commerce on February 20, 2009 and receiving a Special Achievement Award from the university. He is currently continuing his studies for a 2nd Master’s degree in Cultural Contents at the Dongguk’s Graduate School of Digital Image & Contents after finishing the Master’s Degree in Trade Theory and Finance at the Dongguk’s Graduate School in 2012.
Being a popular and versatile entertainer with a clean and positive image, Lee Seung Gi is one of the most likable commercial models and celebrity endorsers in South Korea. He currently endorses a wide variety of products and services, from banking services (KB Group), clothing (Heritory), food (Pizza Hut) and household electronics (Samsung Zipel refrigerators). He has also been ranked number one in the monthly CF (Commercial Film) Model Preference Ranking survey of the Korea Advertisers Association numerous times in recent years.
On 23 June 2012, Lee Seung Gi was one of the torchbearers in the 2012 London Summer Olympics Torch Relay chosen by Samsung, one of the worldwide partners of the said event. He carried the torch from Rochdale Stratford Avenue to Manchester Road.
On 30 October 2012, the National Election Commission of South Korea appointed Lee as the Honorary Online Ambassador of the nation’s campaign for a fair and clean presidential election.

[Someone asked me this question on tumblr, I’m just reposting my answer here :P]
Anyway, I’ve been a kdrama fan for many years. I’d heard about Famous Princesses before, but its length was just too daunting for me. I did download the files to send to my mom (she’s a big kdrama fan as well ^^), but never watched it myself. I’d also heard about X-Man and Love Letter before, but I wasn’t really into Korean variety shows at the time, so I never watched them either. AND I was never into Kpop because I preferred to listen to songs that I could actually understand. So I never had a chance to “discover” SeungGi until last year.
My passion for kdrama was kind of dying down at the time, since there hadn’t been any dramas to my liking in the last couple of years. Even BOF did not impress me at all. But I was getting really bored at the end of July, so I looked for something to watch. I read some very nice reviews on BL, and since I’m a total sucker for Cinderella stories, I decided to give it a try. At first, I did question why they cast a 22-year-old singer for the male lead. And when I started watching it, it was definitely not love at first sight. ^^ I remember thinking, “He’s not the best looking either. So why did they cast him?” The drama was kind of slow in the beginning and I really didn’t like Hwan, but I continued watching, mostly because I wanted to see him suffer. (I know, it’s very sadistic of me. ^^) As I continued on, there were two scenes that stood out and won me over. The first one was Hwan singing ‘Cry Out’ at karaoke. I thought, “Well, I guess he’s a pretty good singer.” The next one was Hwan cleaning the tables at the restaurant by himself but started hallucinating EunSung telling him to smile to the customers, so he smiled. OMG, that smile! I think my heart just totally melted at that moment. ^^
After I watched BL countless times, I decided to google SeungGi, just out of curiosity. But the more I found out about him, the more impressed I became. I then found myself listening to all his songs and watching all his variety shows. Once I started watching 1n2d, that was basically the point of no return for me. ^^
(OMG, I just realized how much I’ve been rambling on. So I’m going to stop myself here before this turns into a novel about my fandom. LOL)

Yes, SeungGi was born in 1987, so he’s turning 24 very soon. 25 would be his Korean age, not western age.

in korea they include the 9months you’re in the womb for, so to reduce any complications, they round it to 1year 🙂

First of all thanks so much for all your hard work in keeping Lee Seung Gi’s webpage alive with current postings on him. You are a true fan. I was reading of how you and some others became his fan and our stories are similar. I have enjoyed korean dramas for a while now but never had an actor or actress that I fancied. I watched Kings2Hearts because it looked interesting. Seung Gi did not capture my attention in the beginning. although he looks dashing when he wears suits :). I normally like to find out about the lead characters in the dramas that I watch. So I google LSG. The more I read about him, the more I checked out episodes like Strong Heart and 2D1N, I found myself really liking him. To me it was not so much of his looks (that came later 🙂 but it was more his character. He’s just a down to earth person, friendly, humble and has a great sense of humor. I mean if you can do silly stuff in 2D1N and laugh at yourself, then you are an easy going person and fun to be around. I’m touched that he always makes an effort to smile and shake hands with his fans even when he’s on the run…ha ha :). Another thing that really impressed me is his interest to get a Masters degree in spite of his super busy schedule. Not many stars would venture into that. After Kings2Hearts I watched BL (which I loved). Seung Gi has improved by leaps and bounds in looks and in his acting skills which can be seen in Kings2Hearts. He’s just awesome !! I guess many of us will have pages and pages of nice things to say about Seung Gi. I just wanted to share mine. It was a wonderful surprise to find out that he was coming to Singapore. I came acros this post and I cannot stop thinking that , myself as well, I came across the Kdramas accudentalli and discovered Lee Seung Gi between all the other actors and singers. I absolutely love his voice and i was attracted to look into more details about him. His charm, humor and clean profile is just so refreshing in this huge crazy world. I was so pleased to learn more about his succesess and I eish him all the happiness and love someone can have. I got to the point that , even I don’t know the korean language I am singing along some of the lyrics and learning the words as Ingo along. Beautiful lyrics in all his sons. Beautiful done, Seung Gi! I’ve started to become big fan of Lee Seung Gi after i watched my girlfriend is GUmiho..When i google for the OST, i juz found out that he is a singer of my favorite song Will You Marry Me..huhuhu..it’s been a year, that song racking in my CD track..and i juz found out who’s the singer last 2 month!!
I’m also watching 2 D 1N by coincidently, maybe the 1st 10 minutes or last 10 minutes..Even i’m a big fan of KBS channel (watching chit chat with beautiful ladies n it’s korean drama), but i never taking seriously watching 2D 1N, never knew what it’s exact time on air..However, when i watch it, i always put my i eyes on this humble and low profile guy, which later on i found out (last 2 month) that HE IS MY SEUNG GI!!!..arghhh..

i’ve known him since 2009 through 1N2D and strong heart and listen to his song ‘will u marry me’ a few times before.. love him in both of the show.. but now i started to love him even more after watching the Brilliant Legacy drama.. hahah.. as what you written above, first part of the drama makes me want to give him a punch on his face, but at the end i still fall in love with him.. 🙂

I happened to watch BL unintentionally when my duaghters were watching it. LSG has caught my attention when the girls were watching 1D2N every Sunday but I didn’t know that he is such a well-known actor. Like Alibaba, I fell in love with LSG after watching BL countless time especially when he went on mission for cruise proposal. He nailed it!!!!
Eversince, I have also googled on LSG, bought his CD from HK as I couldn’t get the older copies in Singapore, uploading all his songs and listening to him day and night. I even went a step forward by learning Korean Language… OMG! this is insane 🙂
LSG amazed me with his talent, versatility, good natured and strong quality individual. He is such a perfect artist and he melted our hearts. He made us smile and listening to his voice, really, really, really awesome.
Thanks for sharing and it is indeed a fantastic effort that you have created this blog ~ sharing the same passion and love we have for our Lee Seung Gi.

There was just a ranking of the idols’ income done by Mnet, and it didn’t include all the celebrities. The figures they used were all estimates, so I wouldn’t take it very seriously.

I’m from Malaysia (working mum). MGIG was recommended to me by my son, a must watch drama. Ever since, I’m so in love with our multi-entertainer & well manner Seunggi boy. I bought his CD & drama from Yesasia.com. Now, I am looking forward to buy his HOPE concert DVD & 1N2D DVD (Korean version).
My family planning for year end Korea trip (22 – 29 December), I’m glad to know that Seunggi will be holding his concert in December, too. But my problem is where can I purchase his concert ticket & I’m afraid of going alone to his concert because I can’t speak Korean.
My family is not going with me for Seunggi’s concert because my son (20 years old) is fan of SNSD & my daughter (15 years old) is fan of Big Bang & my husband want to be with my children if I’m going for concert… I really wish that I can attend since we are there… Now, I really need to find out when is the actual date of his concert so that I can re-schedule the itinerary with my travel agent. I wish that someone can help me on this.

I’m Angie from the Philippines. I am a big fan of Lee Seung gi. it’s my first time here in your site. When I read your story on how you became seung gi oppa’s fan, I reminisced on how i became a fan too. it has a huge similarity. I saw him first in BL in one of the shows in the Philippines before but did not caught my attention. I said then, “he is just an ordinary face” Actually, i did not know his name back then.
Last April 2011, I learned about the kdrama, “My Girlfriend is a Gumiho”. It was long before stored in my brother’s computer. I was curious on what this drama is all about so i watched it. At first, i had again the thought of his face being ordinary. As each episode continues, I started to like him especially his acting skills. I went to the net to search for him because of the curiosity about his real life. I learned that he participated in Nonstop 5, Cinderella Princesses, BL, Kang Shim Jang (Strong Heart), Happy Sunday’s Two days and One Night and MGIAG. I’m not yet connvinced about me becoming his fan that time. I watched 2d1n and it brought me so much laughter that i even cry while laughing. Then, I became curious about what BL is. Again, i watched it over the net. This time the drama caught my attention. I did not know that the lead actor then was Lee Seunggi. I grew so much interest. It brought me lessons on how to deal money, people and life. I really applaud his acting skills here when he was with his grand mother at the hospital crying while narrating the reason of his father’s death. I cried so much. then, I started to become a fan of his. it was because of him that i had taken interest in learning korean. I watch most of his CFs, concerts and variety episodes. I search for updates of him until i found this site. It is very useful because I got to know the latest news and update of our Lee Seung Gi.

I just checked, 13.5% of the visitors on this blog are from Singapore. So you are definitely not alone! 🙂 Two of the biggest fans I know personally, Yon and Nicoleko66, are from Singapore. I think AnnMichelle, who always leaves nice and thoughtful comments, is also from Singapore. There are quite a few others who actively comment here, but I’m sorry that I can’t name them all (with my failing memory). 😛

for the first time i think my feel to him is like your feel. Its make me to skip Brilliant Legacy. Eventhough i know that drama was a big hit in 2009, but i never want to watch it, and i say the actor is not good looking hehehe (Now i won’t say it again)
since i like comedy, so when there is a news about MGIAG, i like it at the first time i hear about it. because i think it will be great. i read it in Indonesian magazine, and again i don’t pay attention to him. i just like its story..so when its release, and i watch it…and then i found him really2 cute. so i start to look for everything about him. then i found 1n2d…so i can’t help but to love him so much.
well, its make me can’t watch BL because i can’t watch him suffer. So i just watch it in final episode. in 1n2d too..i just can’t watch episode 82-83, that he left behind in Nokdo…i really2 feel sad for him,,,

Hi Tryp, thanks a lot because you always update information about Seunggi. I read your site long time but first time I read this part so I Want to share too how i become a crazy, huge fan of Seunggi. I know Seunggi throught 1N2D, my brother watch it on and he like verry much, he said that Seunggi verry famous in Korea, i miss i have to look Seunggi’ face, that time i thoght he’s not good looking and verry normal face (and now I am seized with compunction by it), i dont have chance to see all ep 1n2D because it’s aired too late, i must to work verry early, but a day when i’m off so i have chane to watch it with my brother and 2 sister, I noticed him and i begin like him and i search about him everytime everywhere everywhen I have chance ^_^. So I’m very happy when to know your site. Thanks you very much and wish you have all the best.

Hi I am Luther Lungay. I am a Filipino and just want to share my thought. The first time I saw Lee Seung Gi was actually at MGIG. I didn’t like it at first and i didn’t even appreciate Seung Gi’s beauty. There were part that Seung Gi cried and I don’t know why I felt it and cried. I was really touched when He cried…after those, i listened “from now on i love you” and shocked that he was actually the one who sung it. when i knew it, i search him in Google and said to myself “OMG! what a talented actor he is. ” After that..i Started to idolize him and watch MGIG all over again… From now, I am so addicted to him. I am firstly a HJW fan but I fell in love with LSG in this drama. I started to look up his other works and watched BL and MGIAG. Now, I feel I am crazy about him. I just realized how adorable this guy is. I wish I could watch his shows with English subs. He appears from episode 1 to 190. In the first few episodes, he just had a few scenes. But from episode 8 or 9, he started to have more screen time.
Hi Tryp…I am a new fan of Seunggi after T2KH and in the midst of finding out anything and everything about him. Through this site I am learning more about Seunggi and the more I know , the more i love him. Seunggi is really a remarkable person. This a great site for a newbie like me.
