[Eng] Lee Seung Gi “I prefer the name ‘Lee Seung Gi’ to any titles”

Many thanks to AnnMichelle who had to work extra hard because of SeungGi’s great eloquence! 😆

Lee Seung Gi, who played Choi Kang Chi in Gu Family Book and was the son of SH and WR, met me three hours before the final episode aired. The young man then was more like Lee Seung Gi than the adopted son of Manager Choi of the Hundred Year Inn. His hair, kept long for the drama, was cut short and neat. No wonder Suzy was a little mindful around a modern, casually-clad Lee Seung Gi. When asked how he felt about his outfit, he said, “Very good.”

“It feels so good to be in Seoul. At the Yong In filming location I felt very lonely, as there was nothing nearby. I could not eat the food I craved, but only those available at the mess hall. It was kind of isolated. This morning I cut my hair. How much time it had been for it to grow so long!”

It was a meeting of PD Shin Woo Chul, Writer Kang Eun Kyung, Suzy, and Lee Seung Gi. The drama has achieved No. 1 status in its time slot crowded with competitions of other stars. However, some regrets remained.

“I felt TV ratings, as an indicator of performance, have changed somehow. Of course it’s good to gain ratings in the 20 to 30% range. But there is a thing like tangible popularity. Some shows with ratings as high as 50% faded from people’s memory soon as they ended. Then there were other dramas with relatively lower ratings but stayed with viewers for a long time. Looking it this way, I do feel the popularity of Gu Family Book. You know Kang Chi sometimes removed his bracelet, right? Even kids not yet in school really love GFB and would say something like, ‘Take off your bracelet!’, ‘Change into the beast!’ When those kids grow up and get to know me better, I am sure they will become my staunch supporters… (laugh)”

Through GFB, Lee Seung Gi has enjoyed the highest popularity since One Night Two Days. He also learned a lot from the drama. ‘One Top’ title brought invisible but weighty sense of responsibility, while the filming location taught him patience.

“The filming location was really tough on me. I learned to be patient. (Laugh) I also realized it’s not easy to be One Top. Lots of responsibility and obligations came with it. There was so much stuff to shoulder. Through that process, what I gained was feeling cool as a man.”

Lee Seung Gi did not appear at the beginning of the drama. Ep. 1 and 2 focused on the sad love story of his parents, SH and WR, and successfully grabbed viewers’ attention. After the broadcast, CJH’s name appeared on the real time search lists. It was the highest popularity the actor achieved since his debut. Lee Seung Gi did not mind the response. He put it this way.

“Mr. CJH has gained good reviews through his own efforts. I don’t think that because I am the lead I should have more presence. Coordination is very important. WR and KC are father and son. If one forgets that and starts to think about one-upmanship, then one can easily fall into the trap of scheming. I think I should understand and support the role of WR. KC is a guy in front of TS, Gon, and Master Dam. But before WR, if he could not accept the father and son relationship, he could not express it either. If the intimacy of being a family could not be conveyed, the scenes would seem like a farce. And that’d definitely indicate some lacking in acting skills.”

What is it like to live as a human being? That’s the central theme of the drama and the character used to demonstrate it was JGW (played by Lee Sung Jae). Born a man but not able to live like one, JGW was the utter nemesis of KC, who was born as a half-beast but strove to live like a human being. One could not help but feel curious about their working together.

“I try to be faithful to the script. A script has its flow of thought. It asks actors to do things for a reason. One cannot go against the script simply because one does not want to lose to his opponent. If an actor cannot get a handle on the script’s flow of thought, then he is not a good actor. But Lee Sung Jae sunbae doesn’t make me feel that way. He killed Lord Park, my benefactor, so of course he would make me furious. I could sense his natural charm. And his real person is actually very cute. When the weather got hot, he wore his long robe without trousers to film… No matter what kind of scene to shoot, he always gave his best performance. I learned a lot from this no-tricks acting style.”

During the press conference at the midpoint of the drama, Suzy shed tears when faced questions about her income and popularity. Lee Seung Gi sensed her discomfort and offered his help. As someone who had been through similar career stages, he seemed to best understand how she felt.

“Suzy has accumulated a lot of popularity in a relatively short time. It’s sometimes burdensome to her. I tried to offer my help as an older brother, a sunbae. There is a time when you don’t seem to be able to do anything wrong. That upswing stage needs to be navigated with caution. I’d be pleased if I could help her in that regard.”

So Lee Seung Gi is indeed capable of everything! He’s been outstanding in acting, singing, and variety shows. The reason that he could successfully pass the heady upswing periods and continue was the people by his side.

“There are many people who can control me. Those people make me see right when I made mistakes through haste or over-confidence. Their small suggestions mean big gains to me. When I was on One Night Two Days, my representative often played back tapes for me. Like how I did not show courtesy, got too emotional, or did not act my age, she would point those out to me. Because I have those people who always give me advice, I think I can be on my own.”

Ever since his debut with A Moth’s Dream, Lee has lived under the microscope of the media for 10 years. But they have found nothing gossip worthy. In Korea you would often hear comments like “it’s kind of wearing and boring to live like Lee Seung Gi.” But, at 27, Lee has turned out mature and considerate.

“Our society is very transparent. And people are well educated on an ideological level. So self-management seems the right thing to do. If I could act on whatever impulse I feel, I would let out my anger easily. Compared to that kind of senseless acts, be mindful of consequences seems better. I don’t think senseless acts suit me. Even though reckless people have their charm too, they can be looked down upon. I prefer to be a cool guy.”

As he has revealed himself steadily and gradually, he broke out from his old image but maintained the pure and essential nature. After years of living under the title “Nation’s Younger Brother,” now he is ‘not anyone’s brother’ Lee Seung Gi.

“Rather than hoping for more glorious titles, I think it is best to be without any title. I want to live vigorously with the simple name of Lee Seung Gi. Perhaps people won’t ask “can Lee Seung Gi do it well?” but “how will he show it?” instead, and think of me as a dependable actor. I would like people to be curious about what I am up to next.”.

Thks AM for bringing us this translation. Although I read Chinese, that is too strenuous for me.
I always find something new and good conduct in each and every of SG’s interview.
If a title is like the so called award that comes with a price tag; SG, you are better off without it. It becomes a business transaction and SG has better invest his finance in some worthwhile investments. 😛

Really a commendable actor who take high regard of people’s advices. I can see the reality of shows that have low ratings but stay in the memory of people like for quite a long time, and that’s a result of the hard work of the whole team from the story writers down to the actors themselves. Unique and catchy story + wholesome actors = priceless drama
